What the card shows

A skeleton in black armor rides a white horse, carrying a black banner marked with a white rose. A king lies fallen, a bishop pleads and a child looks on, while in the distance the sun rises between two towers, proof that every ending sets up a new dawn.

As card 13 of the Major Arcana, it sits in the middle of the Fool's Journey, the inner chapter of courage, reflection, fate, honesty, surrender and balance.

Death upright

Not literal death, but a real ending. Something has run its course; letting it go clears space for what comes next.

Upright keywords

  • Endings
  • Transformation
  • Transition
  • Release

Death reversed

You are holding on to something that has already ended. The longer you avoid the goodbye, the more it costs.

Reversed keywords

  • Resisting change
  • Stagnation
  • Clinging

In love

One chapter closes so another can open. For couples, an old dynamic ends and a more honest one can begin.

Career & money

A role, project or way of working is ending. Clear the desk and make room for the next thing.

Yes or no?

Death usually answers no, or at least "not like this." Reversed, the no softens into "not yet", so ask again once the situation has genuinely shifted.

Let it end so something better can begin.
