About this calculator
The Chinese zodiac assigns each lunar year to one of twelve animals in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The popular legend explains the order with the Great Race, in which the Jade Emperor ranked the animals by the order they crossed a river. The clever Rat rode on the Ox's back and jumped ahead at the finish, which is why it leads the cycle. Every animal is said to carry its own temperament, and the idea that you share traits with your birth animal has been a beloved part of East Asian culture for centuries.
Here is the catch most calculators miss: the zodiac year does not start on January 1. It starts on Lunar New Year, which moves between January 21 and February 20. Someone born on February 3, 1992 is a Goat, not a Monkey, because Lunar New Year 1992 only arrived on February 4. This tool uses a verified table of Lunar New Year dates from 1900 to 2099, so January and February birthdays land on the right animal.
Your result goes beyond the animal. Each year also has one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water), set by the year's Heavenly Stem and cycling every two years, plus a yin or yang polarity. Together the twelve animals and five elements form the famous 60-year cycle, which is why 2026 is specifically the Year of the Fire Horse. You also get your traditional best matches (the secret friend and trine partners), the animals you clash with, and lucky numbers and colors. Lucky lists differ between sources, so treat them as fun rather than fixed rules.
How it works

- Read your animal, element and matches, then open any animal page to compare.
FAQ
Why is my Chinese zodiac animal different from what a chart told me?
Simple charts list one animal per calendar year. The zodiac year actually begins on Lunar New Year, between January 21 and February 20, so anyone born in January or early February may belong to the previous year's animal. This calculator checks the exact date.
Some people say the year starts at Lichun (around February 4). Which is right?
Both traditions exist. Everyday Chinese custom uses Lunar New Year, while some fortune-telling systems such as Four Pillars (BaZi) start the year at Lichun, the Start of Spring solar term around February 3 to 5. We use Lunar New Year. If you were born between those two dates, you may see a different animal on BaZi sites.
What is my element and why does it change?
The year element comes from the Heavenly Stem: years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal, 2 or 3 Water, 4 or 5 Wood, 6 or 7 Fire, and 8 or 9 Earth (for the lunar year). Each animal also has its own fixed element, which is shown on its detail page.
Is it a Goat, Sheep or Ram?
All three. The Chinese character yang covers goats, sheep and rams, so English sources use them interchangeably. Likewise the Pig is sometimes called the Boar, and in Vietnam the Ox and Rabbit become the Water Buffalo and the Cat.
Is my birthday stored anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and your answers never leave your device. The tool may remember your last entry locally so you do not have to retype it.
