What it measures

Conscientiousness describes how organized, dependable and goal-directed you are. High scorers plan ahead, keep commitments and resist distractions; low scorers are more spontaneous, flexible and comfortable leaving things open. It is about how you manage impulses and tasks, not how smart or kind you are.

Across decades of research, Conscientiousness is one of the traits most consistently associated with job performance and with keeping healthy routines, which is why it gets so much attention. Low scorers have their own edge: they adapt quickly, improvise well and rarely freeze when a plan falls apart. Many people also find their Conscientiousness creeps up gradually through adulthood.

High scorers tend to

  • Make lists, schedules and backup plans
  • Finish tasks before relaxing
  • Keep spaces and files tidy
  • Are trusted with deadlines and details

Low scorers tend to

  • Work in bursts of inspiration
  • Adapt easily when plans change
  • Feel boxed in by strict rules
  • Are relaxed about mess and lateness

Sounds like you?

Your Conscientiousness is high: you plan, you follow through and you put things back where they belong. People trust you with deadlines, keys and secrets. The roast: you have a system for your systems, and spontaneity needs to be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Your Conscientiousness is moderate: organized when it matters, relaxed when it doesnโ€™t. You hit the important deadlines and let the junk drawer live its own life. The roast: your to-do list is excellent, and it has been on version "final_FINAL_2" for a while now.

Your Conscientiousness is on the lower side: flexible, spontaneous and at your best when improvising. You adapt fast and rarely panic when plans collapse, because you never fully trusted them anyway. The roast: your keys, your charger and your good intentions all go missing at roughly the same rate.
