Curiosity: The Pandora Itch

You opened 37 tabs to research one tiny fact. Totally worth it.

Is this you? Only one way to find out

Take the test

Know someone who is totally this?

Your fatal flaw, explained

You need to know how things work, why people do what they do and what is behind that door. You learn fast, ask the questions nobody else dares to and can talk for an hour about octopus brains, Roman concrete or whatever you found at 1am.

The flip side: your attention is a pinball. You open boxes that were fine closed, read the spoilers, ask the follow-up question that turns a nice dinner into a debate. You rarely regret knowing. You occasionally regret how you found out.

Your hamartia: Pandora

In Hesiod's telling, Pandora lifts the lid of a great jar (the "box" came later, from a Renaissance mistranslation; nor does Hesiod say she was forbidden to open it), and the world's troubles fly out. But one thing stays inside: hope. That detail is the whole point for you. Curiosity lets a few troubles loose, sure, but it is also how humans found fire, vaccines and the far side of the Moon. Your job is not to stop opening jars. It's to choose which ones.

The roast

You started looking up one recipe and somehow finished on the history of the Byzantine Empire. You still haven't eaten.
โ€” The universe, lovingly

The secret upside

  • A lifelong learner with endless fun facts
  • Asks the question that cracks the problem
  • Open-minded and hard to bore
  • Great at connecting unrelated ideas

Where it trips you up

  • Rabbit holes that eat entire evenings
  • Poking at things (and secrets) best left alone
  • Starting projects for the research, not the finish
  • Reading the last page first

In love, at work, with friends

In love: you genuinely want to know your partner, which is rare and wonderful. Just don't treat their phone like a mystery novel.

At work: the innovator and troubleshooter. Write down your "what ifs" and schedule time to chase them.

With friends: the best conversation partner at any party, and the one who makes plans to "just check out that weird shop."

Turn it into a strength

  • Keep a "curiosity list" and chase one item per week
  • Ask "Do I need to know this, or just want to?"
  • Turn rabbit holes into something you share: a thread, a talk, a project

Flaw friends & frenemies

Vibes

  • 37 open tabs
  • fun-fact dealer
  • "wait, why?"
  • documentary binge
  • explorer brain

All fatal flaws
